Dog Owner Calls For Store Policy Change After Attack
Woman Says Pit Bull Attacked Puppy

LAKE PARK, Fla. -- Kristina Coleman wants PetSmart to modify its policy on pets in the store after she said her Jack Russell Terrier puppy was attacked by a pit bull.

Coleman said she was inside the store on Okeechobee Boulevard with her dog, Roxy, and her teenage sister. She said a pit bull attacked, first grabbing Roxy on the face then flipping the dog over and biting her abdomen.

Coleman does not want PetSmart to end its policy of allowing leashed and vaccinated pets into the store. She would like to see the policy changed to make owners muzzle their large pets.

After the attack, Coleman said Roxy got prompt medical treatment from the veterinarian staff at Banfield, which shares space with PetSmart. Coleman said she was surprised to hear the pet medical care center wanted payment for those services.

“Banfield, The Pet Hospital is a separate company from PetSmart, however, most of our hospitals are located within a PetSmart, which allows us to offer an added convenience to Pet owners,” said Dr. Karen Johnson, vice president and client advocate for Banfield, The Pet Hospital. “In an unforeseen situation like this, we are glad that our hospital was able to provide the appropriate medical care to the Pet. We are also happy to hear that the Pet is home with her owner and we wish her a quick recovery.”

A PetSmart spokesperson said the company was attempting to put together a comment for this story.
