            <description>The STCA National Specialty will be held in Hutto, Tx in October.

From 2000 – 2006, I was the Catalog Ad Coordinator. I took a few years off from doing it mainly due to the club using a subpar Superintendent for a couple of years which ended up with the black and white photos being of very low quality. There’s good news; the club is using Onofrio again. They have always done a really good job in the past.

So, I’m back as the Catalog Ad Coordinator this year. In the near future I will post up all information regarding running ads in the 2010 STCA National Specialty Catalog. We will be auctioning the premium pages as was done in the past when I was the Ad Coordinator.

This year’s National Specialty should be a good time. Then again, I always look forward to going to the National Specialty and partying with my current and future friends. I understand Sam Royal and Company will be putting on another BBQ like they did in 2007. It was awesome.

As I stated above; I’ll be posting up information in the near future.

            <title>Subject: Sigh... Florida's Large Step Towards Breed Ban - by: Epicure Am Staffs</title>
            <link>http://www.purebredpuppy.com/forums/the-bull-n-bark/sigh-.-florida-s-large-step-towards-breed-ban.html#228774</link>
            <description>I haven’t been on here in a very long time. This is a subject that needs the attention of all of us.

The public as a whole has grown tired of seeing news broadcasts detailing maulings and sometimes deaths of innocent people due to attacks by specific breeds. A good percentage of the maulings that hit the news involve a small percentage of breeds. The general public wants and deserves to be able to walk through their neighborhoods without having to worry about being attacked by stray dogs. Whenever a really bad attack takes place, the public begins to demand something be done to prevent the attacks from happening. The old, “Punish The Deed Not The Breed” doesn’t cut it these days.

Here in California, we used to be pretty well protected from BSL, but after a series of attacks culminating with the well publicized attack and killing in an apartment hallway in San Francisco, the politicians decided enough is enough. Now, each city and county can make their own laws regarding BSL. You could say that we brought it on ourselves. There are too many dogs being bred by irresponsible people and thus too many dogs end up being sold or given away to large numbers of irresponsible people. What we end up with are dogs that are not properly trained, socialized, cared for or secured.

Within the past couple of years here in California, there were additional attempts to enact even more stringent laws regarding dog ownership. The attempts failed due in large part to a grass roots effort by fanciers, dog clubs and PET PAC putting pressure on legislatures. Another thing that appears to have had a significant impact was the eye opening fact that many cities make a lot of money from dog shows being held in their areas. Most notably in Southern California are the Palm Springs Shows held in Indio and the Eukanuba Championship and associated shows held in Long Beach. These shows bring in huge amounts of money for local merchants and thus huge amounts of tax dollars for the local coffers.

Responsible breeding, placement and ownership are key to preventing the problems that put the dog world as a whole in a bad light. A lot of money is spent on animal shelters caring for unwanted dogs and cats. A couple of years ago I was at the local shelter and it was overflowing with unwanted dogs and cats. There were so many, they were in crates and cages in the hallways. When thinking people start figuring out how much money is being spent on animal shelters and then they also begin figuring there is really not a good reason for so many animals being bred, they start thinking that maybe something needs to be done about it. Couple the overpopulation with dog attacks and then the politicians start enacting more restrictive laws.

Over the years I have had people contact me and ask why they could not find buyers for their puppies. One person that called was totally clueless. The dam of his litter was around thirteen months old. When I asked him if the sire or dam were finished, he asked “What’s That”. When I asked about any OFA testing, he had no clue. Additionally, the litter was a brother sister breeding. I wonder where these puppies ended up. I doubt much screening was done for potential buyers if they ever found any. This is not an isolated case; it happens all the time.

The whole breeding restriction and BSL laws are going to be an ongoing battle.

            <description>They fail to mention how this same agency euth's pits in the same manner... contacting owners after they are already euthanized... Woops! Your dog had a microchip. Sorry.

 Broward Broward animal control killed family cat despite microchip

Incident raising questions about progress of reform at animal shelter
By Scott Wyman, Sun Sentinel

8:51 a.m. EST, March 5, 2010

For six weeks, the Coombs family searched in vain for their lost Bengal cat, O'Malley.

They held out hope that he eventually would be found and returned because they had implanted a microchip in him with their contact information.

But when Broward County's animal control division found O'Malley in mid-February, it did not notify the Coombs family until after staff euthanized the cat.

&quot;I just think they are euthanizing animals and not looking for the owners or anything because we had gone there and been reassured and were relying on them,&quot; Deborah Coombs said. &quot;We were so devastated because our animals are like our children and are part of our family.&quot;

The cat's death has the family and county commissioners wondering if the scandal-plagued agency – which was restructured in 2008 after facing criticism for animal abuse and misconduct – has reformed its ways. The county is apologizing, but officials aren't sure what exactly happened and are waiting for an internal investigation to be completed.

O'Malley had been at the shelter four days when officers decided he was too sickly to live. Officials say no chip was found when O'Malley was initially scanned, but was discovered when he was scanned again after death.

The Coombses are even more infuriated over what they say happened when they picked up O'Malley's body to be cremated. They say a shelter employee ridiculed them and suggested they should be cited for O'Malley being malnourished.

An audit of the agency two years ago found food for dogs and cats in short supply, animal carcasses rotted in maggot-infested bags and workers taking valuable dogs for their own profits. Officials were forced to change procedures to reduce the problems.

&quot;I'm furious,&quot; said Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl, who led the drive to reform the agency. &quot;I'm tired of it – how many years will this keep going on?&quot;

O'Malley, who was about 2 years old, was a house cat who enjoyed stretching out on a bed and fetching balled-up pieces of paper. The family adopted him as a kitten from Deborah Coombs' father and didn't keep a collar on him because he lived indoors.

On Jan. 3, Michael Coombs accidentally left the cover off a cat door in the garage and O'Malley got out. When the Coombes stopped by the county shelter as part of their search, they were assured the staff checks strays immediately for a microchip and calls the family if one is found.

Microchips are tiny transponders implanted under the skin that use radio frequency waves to transmit information about the pet. The chips can be installed by a veterinarian at a cost of less than $50 and can be read with a handheld scanner.

Animal groups say that microchips are helpful in the return of lost pets, but they warn that chips shouldn't replace collars with ID tags.

Chips, which are designed to last 25 years, can occasionally get lost inside the pet and be difficult to scan. Also, until recently, there was no universal scanner to read all the different frequencies.

Beth Chavez, who oversees the animal services division as the county's community services director, said the agency's policy is to scan all animals and contact the owner. But she noted 20,000 animals a year go through the county shelters and that scanning is not foolproof.

&quot;What happened with the cat is a very unfortunate situation and we do feel sorry to the family for what happened,&quot; Chavez said. She could not discuss specifics of what happened because she is waiting for the internal affairs report.

Normally, the shelter waits three days before deciding whether to euthanize or put up for adoption an animal that does not appear to be owned. It makes that same decision after five days with animals that seem to be owned.

The Coombs family said they were called on Feb. 16 about O'Malley's fate. They said they were told that O'Malley had an upper respiratory infection and was so malnourished that he would not have survived much longer.

The Coombses question the validity of the agency's story and say they would have taken O'Malley to their veterinarian if the shelter had given them the opportunity.

They said O'Malley was naturally thin, had long suffered from respiratory problems and had lost muscle tone because of recent hip surgery. They also note O'Malley was clearly a house pet – declawed and neutered.

&quot;We just miss him so much,&quot; Deborah Coombs said. &quot;We would have gone there immediately if they had called.&quot;

            <description> Last night:
I got a letter and then a phone call from a lady in CA who has a friend in TX that is in serious need to place 2 APBT's. This lady's relative pasted away and left the 2 dogs without a home and the relatives are not able to care for them. They were house dogs! 1 male and 1 female from what was told to me, under 5 years old. A foster home until a forever home is found is needed ASAP! The family will put these poor dogs down very soon if help is not found for them. Spindletop phone numbers on the web site do not work. Every rescue group so far contacted will not take them due to the breed! If you know of someone in the area that would be a foster home or a rescue group that will take these dogs in please contact Holly ASAP These dogs have only a couple days let to live if a placement is not found!

This is the letter i got and Holly's number is included.

Thank you if you can help in anyway.
Spread the word, beg a friend, please help these poor dogs that have already lost so much.

______________

Kimberly,
My name is Holly and I am in need of someone in the Houston area to rescue two pet pit bulls. They are very nice house dogs who have been raised together. My phone number is (909)717-6543. They will be put down very soon if I can not help them.
Thanks,
Holly

 TODAY:
I just got off the phone with Holly in CA and have more information about these 2 dogs.

The female is 3 yrs old - black and white - fixed and current on shots.

The male is 1 yr old - tan in color- fixed and current on shots.

Both dogs are kid friendly, housebroken, slept on the bed with the owner. The past owner was in a wheelchair so they are totaly use to medical equipment.

The last wish of the owner was to have her dogs sleep in the bed with her. One dogs wanted out of the room in the early morning hours. At about 10am the second dog scratched at the bed room door to be let out and that is when the in home caregiver found the woman had passed in her sleep. (sorry crying again) Since that time the dogs have been kicked outside with almost no human contact. The daughter of the passed woman is deathly afraid of dogs in general and APBT's expecialy. She has been chucking food over the fence but that is as much contact as they have had since their owner passed. The daughter wants them GONE so she can clear the house and rent it. She has no love for these poor dogs at all and has a &quot;friend&quot; willing to put them down. This im sure means a bullet in the head! She can't even feed the dogs without a fence between them she certainly isn't going to load them in a car for a last trip to the vets to be PTS or pay the bill to do so.
The girl in CA, &quot;Holly&quot; who contacted me is begging for a few more days to give us time to locate a foster home. PLEASE if you live anywhere near Houston and can house them for even a few days it will help. HOURS COUNT RIGHT NOW! Their time is up if we can not get them out of that empty home. PLEASE HELP!
