Anybody know anything about breeding bostons? 6 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 0
I just recently found someone with a boy boston who is the same age and size as my lexy (2 1/2 and 12lbs). She was really excited because she has been unsuccessful in finding a girl to mate her's with, and asked if I am interested. Both are AKC registered. I was just wondering if this was a good idea. Neither of us have any idea what we are doing. Is she mature enough? Does anyone know what kind of expenses there would be? I was also wondering how we would split the expenses/puppies.
Thanks for the help!

Hi...

Well first of all.... let me say that I dont' breed bostons.... I have pit bulls... but I am good friends with Shana.... and I have been privy to most of what she has gone threw with her bostons... lol..

First let me ask... is the female you are refering to also the one pictured in your Avatar? Because if it is.... she is MIS-Marked.... and should not be bred.... All of that white on the head is not disirable.... and I would never consider breeding a dog that was not to the standard.

Second.... have either dogs had their hearign tested? their eyes? How about their patella's? These are all major issues with boston terriers... and should always be cleared before any breedings are done!

Third.... What is the motivation behind breeding your dog... or for that matter their motivation behind breeding their male? what do you hope to accomplish other than making more puppies!

Please dont be offended I'm just asking....

if you decide to go ahead with this plan.... let me assure you that most MOST not all... boston terriers have problems whelping their puppies (giving birth) and have to have C-sections done..... if you wait too long and puppies get stuck your female could die.... you could lose the whole litter..... and even if you have a c-section done you could still lose your female and or the whole litter.... You then are responsible for all those puppies..... and what would you do if they turned out to be deaf? or blind? or both?

There are lots and lots of things that should be considered before breeding... and if I were you I would contact someone like Shana (kismet kennel) for more information on breeding bostons since they arn't my breed.... but I would seriously research this before you go any further.

Elissa makes some good points.

Before breeding your dog you should at LEAST have your vet check the patellas (this is a simple procedure) and take your dog to a certified opthamologist to have the vision checked (CERF). Bostons are prone to juvinelle cataracts as well as various other problems with those large round eyes.

Please check out my site, I have more information as well as links
BT Health

Keep in mind most Bostons need a C-section. The female being 12 lbs puts her on the small size, and in my opinion more prone to a difficult birth.

Read the standard as posted on the AKC.org site. Know what the breed is supposed to look like and ask yourself : "does my dog meet the standard" learn about where her faults are so you can find a male that has those areas as his strengths.

Breeding bostons is not for the faint-hearted or uneducated. Please do a little research on what breeding a boston entails.

I am happy to talk more with you if you want to contact me.
